Military cleanup necessary - ex commander

Issue No: 941; 14 July 2001

It is absolutely necessary to clean up the mess at the military, says the former Commander of the Military and current Chairman of the Great Council of Chiefs Ratu Epeli Ganilau.

Brigadier General Ratu Epeli told today's Fiji Sun: "We know when such things (coup and mutiny) happen, there would be a need for cleansing in the military, to remove those bringing disrepute to the institution. As we all know, its not healthy to sweep all those under the carpet, which explains the need to clean up the military".

Ganilau also stated that the military has never before it is history been subjected to such debilitating and distressing problems as it faces now.

The military's actions and leadership have been the subject of intense discussion at the military camp over the past year. http://www.pcgov.org.fj/hot_press/no923.htm; http://www.pcgov.org.fj/hot_press/no924.htm

Only recently the media released a report of an internal plot by some officers to assassinate the military commander. See http://www.pcgov.org.fj/hot_press/no920.htm

In apparent reference to the assassination plot, today the Sun stated: "We don't want a disgruntled group of armed people running around the country who could cause accidents or `accidents'".
