Landowner demands votes

Issue No: 943; 14 July 2001

A landowner from Kalabu, Suliasi Raibevu has written letters to all his tenants informing them "of his stand" for the next election.

Reibevu claims to own 95% of all land in the Nasinu area outside Suva City. Nasinu is the heart of Fiji's working class population. It has over 70,000 people staying in the area. Most of the land is Nasinu, including the military camp land, belongs to the Kalabu landowners.

Today's Fiji Sun reports Raibevu as saying that he has asked all politicians wanting to contest the Nasinu Fijian Urban Communal Constituency to give it up and look elsewhere. He said: "This is because I own 95% of the land in the constituency".

Reibevu also stated: "Those wanting to contest should think again. Otherwise they would be on the losing end, and on top of that, lose their deposit". He further stated: "Some of those politicians trying to contest the seat are living right in my land and they should think twice".

Reibevu is contesting the election for the Conservative Alliance Matanitu Vanua Party, which was formed by the supporters of terrorists who were released from detention.
