Methodist head wants Qarase to lead

Issue No: 950; 18 July 2001

The President of the Methodist Church of Fiji, Tomasi Kanailagi yesterday stated that the SDL candidates were anointed by God to lead Fiji.

The Soqosoqo Duavata ni Lewenivanua is the political party formed by Laisenia Qarase, the regime's Prime Minister and a key conspirator in the destabilisation of the elected government. (See http://www.pcgov.org.fj/hot_press/no859.htm ). Taxpayers' funds were used by Qarase to form the party. Another major financier is the Fijian Holdings Ltd of which Qarase was a major decision maker in the past and a beneficiary as well. On usurping power, Qarase converted a $20m loan to the company to an outright grant. The Fijian Holdings is financing the SDL's activities and the campaign now.

The party announced 31 candidates yesterday of which 11 are Qarase ministers and 4 are ethnic Indians. Many candidates are known for their strong support for the terrorists who took over the parliament complex last year and threw the nation in turmoil. It is understood that Qarase has made a deal with the chiefs backing the terrorists that he will use his influence to free the terrorists once he gets into power through elections.

Blessing the candidates, Kanailagi stated that God anoints man to lead nations. He said that the SDL candidates were the chosen leaders of Fiji.

The statement has brought condemnation from other Christians in Fiji. One prominent SVT politician stated that Kanailagi is "out of touch with reality", and that the rank and file did not give Kanailagi the authority to support one political party over the others.

Meanwhile, speaking on Fiji TV last night, Kanailagi denied that he was endorsing the SDL.
