Rabuka decides not to contest in August Election

Issue No: 958; 20 July 2001

Following a series of "yes" and "no" decisions to contest, Rabuka finally decides not to contest the August election. He told Fiji TV that he will not contest for personal reasons but will stay in politics. He said that there are numerous political parties that are widening the division in community and he would rather like to play a mediator role.

While Rabuka has given personal reason for his withdrawal, some speculate that he has lost support after his reaction to Ratu Mara's statement regarding his involvement in illegal take-over of the elected Chaudhry government in May 2000. In a recent exclusive interview with Fiji TV, Ratu Mara had linked Rabuka to the political crisis of May 2000.

It is also believed that Rabuka is under investigation for his involvement in last November's attempted mutiny.
