Mr Attar Singh was yesterday endorsed the latest leader to take NFP through to coming election. His appointment was made after the party's first choice Dr Biman Prasad stepped down in 30 hours of his appointment as the leader. Party president Jogindra Singh informed Fiji Times that Mr Singh was the only frontrunner for the position. In the meantime, Attar Singh was thrilled by his appointment and told Fiji TV that though leadership would be a challenge, he is familiar with the responsibilities. It is believed that he has been carrying out the daily party responsibilities and public liaison activities until Dr Prasad's sudden appointment last weekend. Mr Singh informed Fiji Times that one of his main tasks would be to "break through the strongholds of their immediate opposition, the Fiji Labour Party". As Attar Singh takes up the leadership role, rumour is rife that rift in the party was one of the key reasons for Dr Prasad's resignation. It is believed that Dr Prasad's resignation may cost party its credibility. Attar Singh also contested 1999 election under the leadership
of Mr Jai Ram Reddy when NFP lost all communal seats to Fiji Labour Party. Attar
will contest the Suva City Indian Communal seat in August election. |
