Military threatened President Iloilo

Issue No: 964; 23 Julyl 2001

The military had threatened the then Acting President Ratu Josefa Iloilo into appointing Laisenia Qarase as the Prime Minister, alleges a senior soldier. The allegation is contained in a report written by the soldier.

The solider, who has sympathies with the CRW unit soldiers who carried out a failed mutiny last November, says:

"When the army threatened Ratu Iloilo's life before he announced the interim Prime Minister."

"The army had gathered information claiming that Ratu Iloilo will not name Laisenia Qarase as interim PM."

"This is why he was house arrested, threatened and told not to listen to anyone but the army alone. There are others who have their own stories regarding the above and this includes Adi Samanunu Cakobau, Ratu Osea Gavidi, Rusiate Korovuisere and bodyguards that were present. They can say more on this as they were present when Ratu Iloilo was threatened."

"Commodore Frank Bainimarama has to answer questions for what he did. Why did he sack Ratu Mara and then threaten Ratu Iloilo's life? What was he trying to prove? He must come out clean on this matter. He must have thought no one had witnessed what happened that day. He must have forgotten that we still live in a round world."
