Qarase wanted two salaries

Issue No: 975; 26 July 2001

Regime's Prime Minister had plans to draw two salaries from the state for the period March 2001 to August 2001.

The regime had decided that all members of the Parliament were to be paid their parliamentary and senate salaries for this period.

This entitled Laisenia Qarase to his senate salary.

But the regime had also decided that it would also continue to pay its cabinet members a separate salary.

Qarase and 8 other members of his cabinet would have thus been given two salaries from the state.

But after massive public outcry, including condemnation from the media, Qarase changed the decision and asked his cabinet members who were also parliamentarians and senators to draw only one salary.

Qarase has been known throughout the business and political community as an incompetent decision maker.
