Terrorists again ordered detained

Issue No: 977; 27 July 2001

The High Court has ruled that the Magistrate's Court has no authority to grant freedom to the terrorists charged with treason to file their nomination papers for the next election in person.

The ruling came after the Prosecution Office appealed the decision of the Magistrate Salesi Temo allowing terrorists Timoci Silatolu and George Speight to go to the Returning Officer's office to file their nomination. The decision had attracted outrage in Fiji.

But before the High Court could deliver its rebuke of Temo, the terrorists had already filed their nomination and were brought back. Temo had also ordered that the terrorists be allowed to be present in person at the Returning Officer's office today for objections against their nominations. This decision was also overturned.

Meanwhile the media reports that Silatolu's wife had already filed his nomination before Silatolu could go to the nomination office. The wife is a civil servant. Neither the Public Service Commission nor the Education Ministry which employs her, have commented on the breach of civil service rules.
