Respect electoral outcome - Labour

Issue No: 983; 30 July 2001

The Fiji Labour Party has called for a respect for free and fair elections. This was the leading resolution passed at the Party's delegates conference over the weekend.

The resolution read:
The FLP Delegates Conference welcomes recent statements made by Commonwealth Secretary-General, Justice Langa, regarding the forthcoming national elections. The Conference calls upon the military, police, all political parties and leaders, religious organisations and civil servants to ensure that the elections are conducted in a free, fair and clean manner, without recourse to intimidation or the divisive politics of hate, racism and bigotry.

Further, the Party urges the entire Fiji community, including the military, police and judiciary, to honour and respect the outcome of the election. The Conference notes that the failure to do so will result in further isolation from the international community, irreparable destruction of the economy, and deep suffering of our people, particularly the disadvantaged, the poor and the unemployed.

Earlier, the Pacific Islands Development Program called for the nation to respect the results of the election (see: http://www.pcgov.org.fj/hot_press/no785.htm ). The Commonwealth of Nations and the Australian Government have also called for a respect for election results.
