Shameless abuse of public funds

Issue No: 984; 30 July 2001

The Labour Party has referred to the use of public funds by Qarase for political purposes as "shameless abuse of public funds".

A resolution passed at the Party's annual conference over the weekend condemned the financial abuses by Qarase. The resolution, passed unanimously by the delegates of the Party, read:
The FLP Delegates Conference expresses grave concern at the shameless abuse of public funds by the caretaker Qarase administration. This has continued in spite of repeated criticism by the public. In particular, the Conference condemns the administration's vote-buying handouts, its refusal to resign, its use of official resources, vehicles, and time for campaigning, and its dubious calls on the Indo-Fijian business community for campaign funding. The Conference calls for the immediate resignation of all caretaker Ministers who have now filed nomination papers for the elections.

Meanwhile the media has revealed that the Qarase cabinet costs the nation $2.9. This is in contrast to the $1.5m cabinet bill for the democratically elected government.
