Remove Savua, Temo - Labour

Issue No: 985; 30 July 2001

The Labour Party has called for the removal of the Police Commissioner Isikia Savua and the Chief Magistrate Salesi Temo from their posts for incompetence.

A resolution passed at the Labour's annual conference over the weekend states:

The FLP Delegates Conference expresses dismay and disbelief that terrorists George Speight, Ilisoni Ligairi, Timoci Silatolu, Metuisela Mua, Ratu Jo Dimuri and others charged with treason or similarly serous offences have been permitted to contest the national elections. It condemns the decision of Chief Magistrate Salesi Temo to authorise the release of the terrorists to enable them to process their candidature for the elections.

The Conference expresses concern about the inexcusable delays in the investigation and prosecution process relating to the treason case, including the prosecution of those businesses responsible for funding the terrorist overthrow of a democratically elected government. It calls for the immediate removal of Police Commissioner Savua who has demonstrably failed to uphold the integrity and neutrality of the police force. It also calls for the removal of Chief Magistrate Salesi Temo who has seriously compromised the integrity of the magistracy.

Savua has been alleged to be involved in the terrorist uprising of May 2000. An inquiry was ordered into Savua's involvement, but despite abundance of evidence showing Savua's involvement, the Inquiry cleared him. The closed door inquiry, headed by the Chief Justice, has been criticised for covering up Savua. (see: http://www.pcgov.org.fj/archive/2000-11/no177.htm;

Temo has also been accused of being in league with the terrorists. See: http://www.pcgov.org.fj/archive/2001-01/no341.htm )
