Labour assures ethnic Fijian landowners

Issue No: 986; 30 July 2001

The Labour Party has reassured the ethnic Fijian landowners of their land ownership rights.

In a resolution passed by the Labour Party at its annual convention, the Party stated:

The FLP Delegates Conference wishes to reassure the indigenous Fijian community that the Party will continue to respect and honour its land ownership rights which are already enshrined in the 1997 Constitution. The Conference further states that the Party will continue to pursue policies that address the legitimate concerns of the Fijian community in relation to land use and the need for affirmative action on education and business participation, as part of its broader commitment to social justice for all communities.

The Labour Party has a record number of ethnic Fijian candidates contesting the elections this year. One ethnic Fijian contestant stated that he has been with the labour party since its inception and knows that the support for the party amongst the ethnic Fijians has been rising. He stated that this time, the Labour Party will win numerous ethnic Fijian communal seats on its own.
