Baba playing the race card

Issue No: 994; 2 August 2001

The former Labour Party member, Tupeni Baba, who was expelled from the party for breaching party policies and rules, has started blaming the ethnic Indians for his inability to become the Prime Minister.

Baba, together with some businessmen opposed to the Labour Party's principles of transparency and good governance, formed a new party called New Labour Unity Party.

In a radio interview, Baba claimed that the ethnic Indian MP's did not support him for Prime Ministership. Baba was elected by ethnic Indian votes in 1999.

The Labour Party has condemned Baba for the racist outbursts. Party president Jokapeci Koroi stated that Baba must be ashamed of himself playing the race card. Baba was a beneficiary of ethnic Indian votes, and is again seeking ethnic Indian votes.
