Ex-Spy confirms police misled Government

Issue No: 996; 3 August 2001

The Police Department had misled the elected government over the security situation in the country, confirms Metuisela Mua, the head of the disbanded Fiji Intelligence Service.

The elected People's Coalition Government had stated last year that the Police Department had kept misinforming the government of the activities of those who went on to terrorise the nation. (See: http://www.pcgov.org.fj/press_rel/savua_lrv_13dec.htm ). Police Commissioner Isikia Savua is related to terrorist Apisai Tora. It is understood that Savua was questioned by the Cabinet on the delay in charging Tora and others involved in breaching the Public Order Act. Savua has also been implicated by the terrorists as a key conspirator who wanted to become the Prime Minister in the post-coup regime.

Today's Fiji Sun reports Mua as saying that the Police Department's Special Branch provided incorrect reports to the government.

By April 2000, the elected People's Coalition Government had found out that the Special Branch reports were heavily edited by the Police Commissioner Savua of matters relating to the plans and activities of those involved in destabilising the government. Normally, the report comes direct from the Special Branch to the Prime Minister, but since the People's Coalition Government came into power, Savua had directed all SB reports to go to him first for his clearance.

Mua himself was heavily involved with the destabilisation of the elected government. His position had become redundant when the government disbanded the FIS on account of evidence that the FIS was involved in destabilising the government. Mua was charged with treason, but later the charges were dropped and Mua freed. He is now, together with terrorists George Speight and Timoci Silatolu, contesting the national election for the pro-terrorist political party called the Conservative Alliance Matanitu Vanua Party.
