Free crime

30 March 2001

It is an appalling observation that despite criticism after criticism by various religious, social and media organizations of the ineffective, inefficient, corrupt and even racist Fiji Police and Judicial system, the leaders of these publicly financed entities are still sitting in their positions.

This raises questions whether the interim government has any interest in genuinely combating crime in the country at all. Because if they were then the sacking of these chosen few would be the first item on their list of “things to do”.

It is becoming obvious that government bodies are actually allowing corruption, racist and mutinous criminals to go free. Racism and corruption in the police and judicial system shine with the high level of unsuccessful prosecutions of criminal suspects.

Virtually not a single genuine suspect has been legitimately disciplined for the recent crimes of racism, mutiny, corruption or murder. No wonder criminals are so confident they can get away with anything. They seem to know that the police and justice system of Fiji would provide protection for them, if they were caught.

While the NLTB and GCC have always been active motivators within this arena, the Chief Justice has also blown his cover.

It is sad that flopped leaders in their futile efforts to assist our underprivileged indigenous have now adapted to offering “free crime”
