Media release NEED FOR RESPONSIBLE PRESS With Fiji in the throes of a deepening political crisis, it is imperative that the Media exercises extreme sensitivity and responsibility in its handling of news stories and events. The Media has an obligation to foster peace and national unity. It can only do this if at a time of national crisis such as now, it exercises caution and self-restraint so as not to further inflame feelings and increase tensions. The Fiji Times in particular needs to remember that the manner in which news events are treated and reported can be quite inflammatory and cause of further incitement. This particular newspaper continues to pursue its own agenda at the expense of the nation. Its political reporting is often mischievous, it goes out of its way to provoke situations and create further instability by playing one side against another. The Fiji Times' handling of statements and comments following the revolt within the army barracks, is the latest instance of how this paper tries to manipulate news, and inflame opinions and feelings to serve the agenda of a few.
